** COMMENTS
(UGX, 5/17/93, pg. 8)
DEC's Unix implementation, OSF/1, can also run Unix SVR4 and Ultrix
applications natively. This built-in compatibility framework is now being
called Habitat.
514.
** COMMENTS
(UGX, 5/17/93, pg. 8)
DEC executives have said that the Open Software Foundation better
progress in the coming months or lose funding. Some industry watchers say
that HP and IBM joined the COSE move as a way out of OSF and that OSF
could eventually find itself with its funding terminated to become a for-
profit software developer.
515.
** DEC ALL-IN-1 UPGRADED
(CW, 5/10/93, pg. 16)
DEC announced new services, end-user options and entry-level pricing for
the company's All-in-1 office software. Also announced was better
integration with TeamLinks products. Additional services include migration
assessment, upgrades, customization and personal assistant/teamroute start-
up services.

HP ARTICLES
***********************************************************
516.
** HP BUILDS IN INFRARED
(CW, 5/10/93, pg. 1)
HP will become the first company to build infrared technology into its PCs.
Some see this move as the first step toward widespread use of infrared as a
means of connecting desktop and portable PCs, personal digital assistants,
printers and even telephones and automated teller machines.
517.
** HP AND LOTUS TEAM ON PORTABLE
(CW, 5/10/93, pg. 6)
HP and Lotus introduced an updated model of HP's 95LX palmtop with a
built-in version of Lotus' CC:Mail. The $745 100LX features a serial port
for printers and modems and an infrared link to HP desktop computers.
518.
** MP HARDWARE, WINDOWS ON PA-RISC IN WINGS
(OST, 5/10/93, pg. 4)
HP has its first multiprocessor workstations in the lab now and plans on
introducing them within a year. The workstations, in a dual processor
configuration, would scale to at least twice the performance of the existing
high-end systems.
519.
** VINES FOR HP UNIX ON TAP
(OST, 5/10/93, pg. 24)
Porting Vines network operating system to HP's Unix servers headed the list
of product developments from Banyan Systems. Vines for HP will ship by
year's end on HP's Series 800 Risc servers. Banyan says Vines will be
available on two other RISC platforms in 1994.
520.
** HP LEARNS PALMISTRY
(IW, 5/10/93, pg. 64)
Designing a new product in the computer industry is part science, part
politics, part group therapy, and part luck. For example, HP's new 100LX
DOS-based palmtop had a gestation period of two years because HP sought
to deliver full PC compatibility. The feature was undervalued in its
pioneering predecessor, the 95LX, introduced two years ago.
521.
** HP ADDS SERVER DATABASE SHADOWING
(EN, 5/17/93, pg. 16)
HP moved to increase the fault tolerance of its network servers by adding
shadowing capabilities to its HP Allbase/SQL relational database
management system.
522.
** HP, UB OFFER NETDIRECTOR FOR UNIX
(CW, 5/10/93, pg. 60)
HP and Ungermann-Bass have entered a joint development agreement
whose first fruit is a Unix version of UB's network management platform,
NetDirector. The product will provide management of UB hubs as well as
Simple Network Management Protocol-based network devices, through HP's
OpenView Network Node Manager.
523.
** HP OFFERS MULTIVENDOR INTEGRATION WITH NEW
OPENVIEW APPLICATIONS
(UGX, 5/17/93, pg. 4)
HP is offering new management applications and a centralized systems
integration component for the Unix version of its OpenView system
management environment. The new software leads the way towards
managing IBM and Sun, as well as HP systems. Operations Center runs on a
central system collecting and monitoring data from managed Unix clients,
which may include HP, IBM, and Sun Unix boxes.
524.
** HP CREATES INTEGRATED OPENWAREHOUSE
(UGX, 5/17/93, pg. 4)
HP has released HP Open WareHouse, claiming it is the first fully scalable
open system for data warehousing. This open systems approach enables it
to offer data warehousing at a small fraction of the cost of proprietary
systems.

IBM ARTICLES

525.
** IBM BUYING $27-MILLION STAKE IN OBJECT DESIGN
(OST, 5/10/93, pg. 18)
IBM's Programming Systems division has purchased an undisclosed share in
ODI, which developed and sells the ObjectStore object-oriented database
management system. IBM plans to use the technology both internally and in
its products.
526.
** IBM UPGRADE PROGRAM TO MOVE APOLLO DOMAIN USERS
TO RS/6000
(OST, 5/10/93, pg. 42)
Last month, IBM announced a plan to upgrade Apollo users to the RS/6000.
The company is working jointly on the upgrade program with Enabling
Technologies Group, a company staffed largely by Apollo Computer
alumni. HP maintains that the IBM program poses little threat.
527.
** IBM SEEKS PARTNERS. RS/6000 : FREE AT LAST
(IW, 5/10/93, pg. 15)
IBM has agreed to work with Oracle to tailor Oracle's software for the
RS/6000 and jointly fund initiatives to market and cross-train their sales
forces. The RS/6000 contributed $800 million in revenues to IBM's last
quarter.
528.
** THE OTHER UNIFORUM ANNOUNCEMENTS
(RSM, 5/93, pg. 6)
IBM announced DB2/6000, IBM's relational database for AIX that is
compatible with its DB2 mainframe product. It can be used as a server in a
LAN environment supporting applications on DOS, Windows and OS/2. To
serve AIX applications, though, requires the optional AIX Client
Support/6000.
529.
** IBM FASHIONS OPTIONS PLAN FOR MANAGERS
(WSJ, 5/13/93, pg. B1)
In an aggressive move to win his top mangers' loyalty, IBM's new chairman,
Gerstner, is offering them a way to make money from their worthless stock
options. Under the plan, IBM will let employees swap old options - some
set at prices as high as $160 a share - for new ones exercisable at only
$47.88 a share. But employees will have to swap, on average, 2.5 old
options to receive each new one.
530.
** IBM PLANS A SINGLE CPU FOR ALL LINES
(UGX, 5/17/93, pg. 3)
IBM is developing an AS/400 H-series processor around the RIOS 2 RISC
architecture and, in parallel, is developing a single processor architecture
that will become the basis of its mid-range offerings in 1995.
531.

(EN, 5/17/93, pg. 4)
IBM signed agreements to supply parts, services and software to two
mainframe computer manufacturers in the former Soviet Union.

WORKSTATIONS AND NT SERVERS
(UGX, 5/17/93, pg. 3)
NCR claims to have the fist mainframe-class system using a Pentium chip
with the launch of its System 3555 symmetrical multiprocessor. Other new
systems include the 3360 single or dual processor workstation, the single or
dual processor 3430 workgroup server, and the six processor 3455 and eight
processor 3525 departmental servers.
534.
** NCR INTRODUCES SYSTEM 3450 SINGLE PROCESSOR
(NC, 5/93, pg. 8)
NCR introduced the NCR 3450 uniprocessor (3450-up), a single processor
version of the System 3450 multiprocessor server. The system is available
in 3 models, starting at $26,000 and is upgradeable to the multiprocessor
system.

** UNIX CONVERSION SERVES UP MIXED BREW
(CW, 5/10/93, pg. 73)
Heileman Brewing recently ended a three-year conversion from IBM and
Unisys mainframes to three Pyramid servers, and while it has been pleased
with the results, the system has had its shortcomings. The company had to
put together its own systems management software, which is now a
patchwork of programs that do not communicate with one another.
[ Editor's note: This article points out the problems Pyramid is having with
delivering a systems management solution. ]
